If you went to Sunday school, a Christian school or Vacation Bible school, perhaps you can. I went to the second one, once in a blue moon to the first one and never the third. At school, they taught me Bible stories, made me memorize Bible verses, like the one that says, “Train up a child the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it” – Proverbs 22:6.

But at some point in your Christian life, if you want to know God, really have a relationship with the Lord, you have to study the Bible and life, for that matter, for yourself. There came a time, in my later teen years, when having the Word taught to me, preached to me, assigned to me, wasn’t enough anymore, and I began to study it for myself. So I guess Proverbs 22:6 was right.

Studying Proverbs on my own however, was not such an easy feat. Some verses, like the one above, were pretty straightforward, but others tripped me up. Case in point, Proverbs 6: 1-2 states:

“My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, if you have shaken hands in pledge for a stranger, you have been trapped by what you said, ensnared by the words of your mouth.”

Similarly Proverbs 11: 15 states:

“Whoever puts up security for a stranger will surely suffer, but whoever refuses to shake hands in pledge is safe.”

These verses confused me, especially since they seemed to stand in direct contrast to the more popular and oft quoted Matthew 22:39 which says, “… Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” (I couldn’t help but go with the King James version for this one.)

What I couldn’t understand is if you’re supposed to love your neighbor as yourself, why wouldn’t you put up security for them? Wouldn’t that be the nice thing to do? The right thing to do?

It was years ago when I began studying those scriptures – decades even – and I still don’t know if I completely understand their meaning. But as the saying goes: just keep on living. Watching the fallout from French Open runner-up Aryna Sabalenka’s comments about French Open Champion Coco Gauff’s win, the meaning of those verses continues to become clearer.

Of course there’s no guarantee that my interpretation of those verses or the real-life tennis pro situation I’m using to help explain it is correct. That’s the thing about studying the Bible and life In general – there’s an element of faith to it. You have to be open to the idea that God will reveal some things to you, be open to the fact that you might get it wrong, while trying your best to get it right.

It’s like that classic Debarge song from the 80s that was later remade into a gospel record by Blackstreet in the 90s – said, “It will all reveal in time.”

So how does the Coco, Sabalenka situation relate to this? Well, let’s recap, a bit, what happened.

After being down 1-4, 40-love to Sabalenka in the first set of the French Open final, Coco rallied back to win the championship in a stunning 65-77, 6-2, 6-4 three-setter.

During her runner-up speech at the trophy presentation, Sabalenka preceded to emphasize and apologize for how bad she felt she played. But she didn’t stop there – no. She took it another further during her solo press conference following the trophy presentation where she went on to state that Coco didn’t play well, and that fellow WTA top ten player Iga Swiatek, who Sabalenka beat in the semi-finals, would have beaten Coco had she advanced to the final.

For many folks, her comments were giving sore loser, especially amongst American audiences who I hear dragged her for filth on social media. But tennis is an international sport, so even outside of the United States, Sabalenka’s comments didn’t go over well.

Just like Coco kept it cool on the court during their high-stakes match while Sabalenka was losing it, when reporters informed her of Sabalenka’s unfavorable comments, it was no different. Coco’s professional and gracious attitude, even further ingratiated her with fans. Keeping that same energy during her subsequent press tour, I think, endeared her to the public even more. The residual effect? Sabalenka’s loose lips ended up digging herself an even deeper whole than she could have ever suspected.

This was especially a problem for Sabalenka given Wimbledon was right around the corner, and the US Open, where she is the defending champion, was not far behind that. Tennis athletes are constantly mentioning how having the crowd on their side helps them get through their matches, but with the pervasive sentiment that Sabalenka was a “mean girl” swirling in the atmosphere, Sabalenka had potentially set herself up to enter hostile territories at the last two Grand Slams of the year – if not at the All England Club, certainly at Flushing Meadows.

So what did Sabalenka do? Think fast! She’s been posting Tik Tok dances on that app, featuring other tennis stars like Novak Djokovic, for a while. Apparently, someone now had the bright idea to feature Coco in these videos to quell things over with upset fans. Coco went along with it. Not only was it featured on both of their socials, media outlets picked it up as well, presenting the general message that the world No.1 and 2 were all good, therefore fans should be too.

It seemed to have worked. While there were some holdouts still not letting her off the hook, I increasingly started to see comments about giving Sabalenka another chance. Undoubtedly part of the reason some had a change of heart was because Coco, herself, made a point of repeatedly giving Sabalenka the benefit of the doubt, downplaying the possibility that Sabalenka’s comments were malicious, and instead framing them as an emotional slip up that warranted forgiveness. But it’s one thing to forgive someone and another to defend or make excuses for them.

I personally didn’t see one interview Coco did after her French Open win where she wasn’t asked about Sabalenka’s remarks. People seemed to be just as interested in Coco’s thoughts on Sabalenka’s response to her win as they were about her win itself. Each time they asked her, Coco gave a pretty long and drawn-out answer about how she disagreed with Sabalenka’s comments, but how she also understood how someone could let their emotions get the best of them. But she didn’t stop there – uh, uhn. She took it another further, taking time out of her busy schedule to join Sabalenka in a Tik Tok video, after coming off a demanding press tour, with Wimbledon just days away.

Next thing you know, Wimbledon starts and boom—Coco’s out in the first round. Meanwhile, Sabalenka goes on to advance to the semi-finals.

As I watched the whole thing play out, all of a sudden those Bible verses from Proverbs about not putting up security for your neighbor came to mind. What’s more, unlike before, it started to make more sense. There is such a short time period between the clay court (French Open) and grass court (Wimbledon) seasons that Coco really didn’t have time to concern herself with or address what Sabalenka said as much as she did. Given this fact, her focus should have been honed in more on preparing for Wimbledon and the other grass tournaments leading up to it, and less on trying to help preserve Sabalenka’s image.

The only time she should have addressed the matter verbally was when she was first asked about it during her press conference immediately following her win. After that, seeing that people were not letting it go, her public relations team should have released a brief statement addressing the matter via Coco’s Twitter or Threads account, then let all subsequent interviewers know beforehand that Coco will not be discussing it any further. If an interviewer asked her about it anyway, her PR team should have prepped Coco to simply refer them back to her statement on Threads.

When Sabalenka’s team came a calling (To be clear, I’m totally assuming here. I have no idea how Coco got involved in Sabalenka’s Tik Tok video. However, since it was Sabalenka’s reputation that was hurting, she stood to benefit more from the collab than Coco did. So I’m assuming it was her team’s idea. But even if it wasn’t, the point I’m about to make still remains.) talking ‘bout do you want to do a dance video with our girl? Coco’s team should have politely declined stating that Coco was focusing on Wimbledon preparations at that time, but perhaps she’d be available after Wimbledon.

That is not to say that had Coco and her team done the things I’ve suggested here, she would have advanced beyond the first round – that, we will never know. It is to say that the mental and emotional toll alone of constantly rehashing someone’s adverse comments about you can be damaging. Couple that with the rigors of the winner’s press tour– that no one else had to go on mind you – which also ate into her grass court prep time, and you have a recipe for getting beat early at Wimbledon.

As I heard one preacher put it, years ago, when it comes to situations like these: I’m not going to light myself on fire to keep you warm. Obviously keeping someone warm is a nice thing to do, but not if it’s going to cause you to get burned. So perhaps that’s what that verse means when it says you suffer from putting up security for a neighbor or stranger.

So why was Coco’s first round exit significant other than the obvious loss at an opportunity to secure another Grand Slam title? Well, several reasons. Here’s how she suffered:

She has a goal of being No. 1. Coco Gauff is not just in this for Grand Slam championships. She’s made it clear that she also wants to be at the top of the rankings. Following her French Open win, she remained the world no. 2 with 7,899 points. That’s 3,741 below Sabalenka’s 11640 points at that tournament’s end.

However, after her first round Wimbledon loss, Coco stood at 7669 points. That’s because points expire after one year which means Coco lost the 240 points she picked up at Wimbledon last year for getting to the fourth round. She also gained 10 points for making it into the first round this year.

Meanwhile Sabalenka picked up another 780 points for making it to Wimbledon’s semi-finals this year, extending her lead over Coco to 4,751 points landing at 12,420 points. She didn’t lose any 2024 points since she didn’t play in Wimbledon last year.

What’s more, the most points you can get at a tournament is 2,000 and to do that you have to win a Grand Slam. So as you can see, while it’s definitely not an impossible feat, it’s nonetheless a formidable gap for Coco to overcome given that Sabalenka has been consistently going deep into tournaments, while Coco sometimes has trouble getting pass the earlier rounds. Furthermore, even if Coco goes deep, if Sabalenka goes deep too it still won’t matter. At this point, Coco doesn’t just need to win, she needs Sabalenka to lose early and often simply to close the gap, let alone surpass her.

Her No.2 position isn’t secure. Not only does she need to close the gap between herself and Sabalenka, she also needs to keep the others among the ranks at bay. Even after winning the French Open, world No.3 Jessica Pegula was hot on her trail with 6,483 points – just 1,416 points behind her. Fortunately for Coco, many of the other top ten players – including Pegula, who was the only one within striking distance – loss in Wimbledon’s early rounds also, allowing Coco to maintain a bit of a cushion, but not a comfortable one. Had Pegula so much as made it to the Wimbledon final, even without the win, she would’ve had a net gain of 1230 points (1300 for reaching the finals minus the 70 for reaching round two last year) to edge out Coco’s 7699 points with 7,713 points to take the No. 2 spot.

With her Wimbledon win this year, the now six-time Grand Slam Champion Iga Swiatek netted 1870 points (2000 points for the win minus last year’s 130 points for reaching the third round that dropped off) landing at 6,813 points. Swiatek is now less than 1000 points away from surpassing Coco to take the No. 2 spot.

Both Coco and Swiatek are playing in the National Bank Open happening July 26, 2025 – August 7, 2025 – a tournament that rewards the winner with 1000 points. Coco will have to make it at least to the quarter-finals to safeguard her world No. 2 status.

She makes less money. While this is probably the least of her concerns as I’m pretty sure the reportedly highest-paid female athlete in the world makes more money through her endorsements than on the court. Nevertheless (I love using that word), the cash prize you get for playing is still a pretty penny, indeed. Every round you advance, the more money you make. Here’s the Wimbledon prize money breakdown:

Gentlemen’s and ladies’ singles

GBP

USD

Winner

3,000,000

$4,108,950

Runner-up

1,520,000

$2,081,868

Semifinalists

775,000

$1,061,478

Quarterfinalists

400,000

$547,860

Fourth round

240,000

$328,716

Third round

152,000

$208,186

Second round

99,000

$135,595

First round

66,000

$90,396

These earning are cumulative, not progressive. So, if you lose in the second round, you don’t get $135,595 + $90,396, you just get $135,595.

The mental aspect. The mental and emotional toll taken for going from a championship winner in one Grand Slam to defeated in the first round in the next, must be pretty hard. To add to that, Coco also has people in social media comments using her early exit as proof that what Sabalenka said about her was correct. It’s just extra stress that perhaps could have been avoided had she made it a point to not talk about Sabalenka’s comments in her press tour interviews and not do Sabalenka’s Tik Tok video and instead focused on preparing more.

Interestingly enough, during Sabalenka’s semifinals match against American Amanda Anisimova, the world No.1 complained that Anisimova didn’t say sorry after a certain haphazard point that players typically apologize for. When reporters asked her about it during the press conference following her loss, Sabalenka simply said, “That’s on her.”

It is noteworthy to point out that with the US Open coming up, Sabalenka couldn’t afford to say anything else that could even remotely be construed as mean about another American player. Clearly, she learned a lesson from the previous backlash she received. But I also liked her answer because in it she succinctly made three things clear: 1) she still wasn’t pleased with Anisimova’s behavior 2) she wasn’t going to make an excuse for her, like saying maybe she was having a bad day, or no one’s perfect and 3) she put it back on Anisimova and let her take ownership of her own actions without putting her down. I don’t think we’ll be seeing any Tik Tok videos with those two any time soon.

Oh how I wish Coco would have taken that approach, but experience is a good teacher. Recently I saw on Coco’s Instagram that she chose to take a staycation to relax and recenter herself instead of participating in the Mubadala Citi Open– a tournament she won two years prior. Now that’s a decision, I think, serves her well.

While nothing is certain, the good news is, Coco can still turn this around. As another Bible passage says, “…But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead,I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:13-14).

Coco doesn’t have to become the world No. 1 tomorrow, this year, or even in a couple of years for that matter, to still one day snag the top ranking and remain there for a while. She can still win Wimbledon. She can still win a bunch of other championships as well, adding to her collection – all the while continuing to inspire others through her successes and failures along the way.
