Lately there’s been a lot of talk about the BOMBSHELL, SHOCKING, EXPLOSIVE interview Talk Queen Oprah Winfrey conducted with Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry.
But come now, was there really anything unexpected about the British royal family that was exposed during that interview? Not for me. I wasn’t one bit surprised by anything they alleged the institution, the firm or whatever else they want to call them did.
I was, however surprised by a few things, and I’ll get to that in a bit. But first I want to bring to your attention some things that I think are flying under the radar, or for whatever reason, just left unsaid. So, I’ma say it.
Before I get into this, I just need to preface this by saying, everything I’m about to say is strictly my opinion based on my observation from what I seen or heard in the media. I don’t know these people, have never met these people, but this is what I think. So here we go.
There’s No Way Meghan didn’t Know about the Royals
Now, I’m not calling her a liar, but this sure doesn’t sound like the truth. To me there is just no plausible way she didn’t know who Harry was or the drama surrounding the royal family. I mean whether you keep up with the royals or not, and I certainly don’t, if you’re an American with hot-running water and electricity, there’s a more than good chance you know about the British royals. And, if you are an American with hot-running water and electricity who grew up in Hollywood and has a career in Hollywood – to quote one of my favorite Aretha songs, it ain’t no way you don’t know who those people are and the issues associated with them.
The first time I heard Meghan say she wasn’t aware of Harry was during that interview she did with the BBC after they got engaged. It didn’t ring true to me then either. She said she wanted to find out about him through him. This makes sense because there is nothing like getting to know a person by actually getting to know a person, face to face, spending time together and such. But in 2016, nine years after the iPhone was released, and people will stand outside a restaurant searching for pictures and reviews before they go in to eat, you gon’ tell me she didn’t google this man. Chile, please. The only way that’s plausible is that she already knew so much about him and the royals she didn’t need to google him…even then I think she would have still and did google him.
In addition, she interned at an US Embassy – sure it was in Argentina, but still – and majored in international relations along with theatre. You mean to tell me the British royals never came up in one of your international relations classes?
Furthermore, she lived in Toronto, Canada for several years while shooting Suits. Canada is a British commonwealth (whatever that means). I’ve been to Canada, and they actually have Queen Elizabeth on a coin over there (I forget which one – it may be several). And you didn’t know anything about these royals?
If that’s not enough, during the Oprah interview she also claimed that she knew Eugenie before she knew Harry. Eugenie just so happens to be Sarah Ferguson’s (the original Fergie) daughter. Fergie famously complained about the challenges she experienced with being a royal.
I was 17, camping on the backside of Catalina Island where we had to hike 10 minutes down a mountain to go to the bathroom or take a shower, when Princess Diana died. This of course was before cell phones were as ubiquitous as they are now, and I still got word of Diana’s tragic death while I was over there. When I got back to the mainland, it was all over the news, people were talking about it, it was everywhere. Meghan was 16 at the time living in L.A. Now you mean to tell me she didn’t know about the circumstances surrounding her death? I don’t think so.
Lastly, Meghan was an actress. People in Hollywood are usually obsessed with shows like Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood and Extra. These outlets covered William and Kate’s wedding. At that time the British royals were so much in the American media they even made Kate’s little sister Pippa famous. Now you mean to tell me Meghan Markle wasn’t privy? Uh-uhn.
So, if the Duchess of Sussex did know what the royal family was about, why would she say she didn’t?
I believe it’s because she didn’t want to come across as a gold-digger or superficial. I mean the way they’ve been rumored to have gotten together, I can see how it can be misconstrued. Notice, they don’t talk much about how they met. But what I heard back when it was just announced that they were getting married is that Prince Harry was purposely looking for an American girl, preferably an actress – but not too prominent—one who had some sense of what it’s like to be in the spotlight. I recall reading or hearing somewhere that it was sort of like a casting call, his people put out, for a woman who was interested in him and who didn’t mind taking on the scrutiny that came along with dating a royal.
From a young girl even through now, Meghan has proven herself to be quite the feminist woman. While I think she thought the chance to date a prince was an offer she couldn’t refuse, the way it was allegedly arranged is kind of archaic and doesn’t mesh well with certain modern feminist views. In addition to that, he had way more money than she did, which could lead more towards that idea that maybe she was a gold-digger. Being a Black woman betrothed to a White prince, I don’t think she wanted the added drama. So instead, they made it seem like they came together in a more casual way – a way not untypical of a woman who wasn’t about to marry a prince.
Despite how their romance allegedly began, I do believe these two actually hit it off and their love for each other is real.
Okay this is getting long. I’m going to stop right there for now. But don’t worry, I won’t leave you hanging. I’m going to do something I don’t normally do and post some more tomorrow. I have much more to say. So check back, tomorrow, Thursday, March 11, 2021 for more of what I believe was left unsaid during and following Oprah’s Meghan and Harry interview.
And, if you missed the interview, CBS is going to re-air it on Friday, March 12, so check your local listings.
But for now, parting is such sweet sorrow. Until morrow.
