The 4 Components of My Holistic Approach to Beauty No.3: Getting Some Sun

I came up in a time when people used to say staying in the sun too long is bad for you. People said too much sun’ll give you skin cancer. And for the longest time I stayed out of the sun, a difficult feat living in Southern California. Remember, it never rains here.

It also didn’t help that I was stung by a bee when I was 17-years-old, and I swear ever since then it was like I became allergic to the sun, especially when combined with chemically formulated sunscreen. To much exposure and I break out in a terrible rash, and my eyes swell. To this day I cannot use anything—makeup, lip balm, lotion – that has SPF. So I stayed out of the sun.

Then I learned that my vitamin D was low, and I decided to get more sun, and I tell ya, it made a world of difference…at least that’s how it seemed.

And maybe it’s just me, but I think it’s also improved my skin – the tone, the texture. I don’t know, maybe the suns rays feed my melanin. I have no idea what that means, I just know that I feel like my skin feels and looks better after it’s been kissed by the sun. Not too much sun, but a good hour of sun serves me well.

All right so that was number 3. Be sure to check back tomorrow for my 4th and final component to my holistic approach to beauty.

Until then!

Hello! Welcome to Shirscribe! I know my face doesn't look so welcoming in this photo, it's just that I did those braids myself and I actually like this pic. But I am really happy you're here, so come on in, have a look around, read a post or 50, comment if you'd like and come back soon!

Introducing My Writing Practice!

You know, writing rarely comes easy for me. Most of the time I mull over it forever, then edit it and edit it,  only for it to still be filled with errors, or just not be quite right.

Part of the problem is I’m reaching for that old unattainable perfection. The other part is I need to read and write more.

So this is me, writing more.

In this series, I’m giving myself two hours to write about a topic of my choice nonstop, and 30 minutes to edit it before I post it here, just as it is.  The great sentences and the incoherent ones with spelling and grammatical errors too.  I’m just going to write and see what it will be.

I’ll be posting these writing practices once a week. I’m not sure which day, and maybe no particular day, just one time a week, with no end date as of now.

I can be so insecure about my writing, so I think this will be helpful.

Here’s to writing and getting better at it!

Thanks for reading!

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. — Psalm 46:4

Lord, let me be that river.
