Last Post of the Year

Wow, it’s been a bit of a hectic week for me — lots on my mind and lots to do. It wasn’t until yesterday that I realized that I totally forgot to do a Wednesday Roundup on Wednesday. Oops! You see for the most part, I don’t use a calendar or reminder notices for personal things that I have to do. You know, if I have a doctor’s appointment, renew my license, post on my blog, I usually don’t make a note of it, I just remember. On a job it’s different, I use all the things, but for myself I usually just remember. This time, however, was different. So that’s something I’m going to try and incorporate more in my personal life — using calendars and setting reminders.

In other news, like the title says, this is going to be the last post of the year. We literally have only two weeks left in the year and oh what a year it has been. While I’m typing this, I’m really craving ice cream, just thought I’d share. Anyway, I remember when I was a kid, I’d always be a little sad on New Year’s Eve because I hated to see the old year go. In particular in 1989 on NYE, I was sad to see the 80s go. It was my first decade…well, technically the 70s was, but the 80s was the first decade that I was aware of. But then as I got older and started lifin’ more and more, I was more than happy to give the old years the boot. One year in particular I remember was 2004, I started it in California and ended it in Georgia. I couldn’t be happier getting rid of it three hours early. For many years after that, I was happy to see the old year go. Now, I’m kinda somewhere in between. I’m not as sad as I was as a child to see the old year go, but I’m not as happy as I was in 2004 to get rid of it. Anyway, what’s your thoughts on the new year?

Between now and then I’m most likely going to spend a lot of time going to the movies. There are four movies in particular that I want to see: Wonka, American Fiction I think it’s called, The Shift, and The Color Purple. Though I must say, I’m a little, maybe even a lot hesitant to see The Color Purple. I saw it in theatres back in the day when it originally came out. and over the years, I’ve watched it sometimes when it came on TV. I must say, I’m not a fan of the story. I don’t really find it empowering at all. When I watched all the press the actresses did for it and they talked about how heavy the material was for them, how hard it was to carry the burden of those characters, I don’t know if that’s the best movie for me to see right now. I know at the end of the movie the main character sings a song called I’m Here, as if still being here is a triumph. And don’t get me wrong, I know it is to some extent, but I don’t want to just be here, I want to thrive. Like just being here is not enough, as big of a blessing it is, damnit I want more. And I don’t know if I want to celebrate a movie that just celebrates being here. But I don’t know, it has such an amazing cast, I might just go and see it anyway.

Well, anyway, it’s almost midnight so I’ma wrap this up. My birthday is coming up and Christmas is coming up. We’re going to get a tree this week, and they’re cheaper now so I’m happy about that. I’ll be making the mac and cheese and green for Christmas dinner, then I’m going to make my delicious chocolate chip pecan cookies for NYE and a healthier version of buffalo chicken dip. I make my own ranch dressing and my own Hidden Valley Ranch packet seasoning, because have you seen what’s in that stuff?

But anyway, that’s all folks. Happy Birthday to me, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and here’s to making 2024 the best year yet!

There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. — Psalm 46:4

Lord, let me be that river.
