You are More than What You do for Work

We live in a society that often places value on people by what they do. The CEO is valued more than the secretary, the secretary more than the janitor, the janitor more than the person with no job at all….

When is Nothing Better than Something?

I’m writing at the absolute last minute again because I failed to plan ahead. My night-owl-ness has kicked in full-fledged now. I literally went to bed at around 6:30 this morning – not woke up, literally went to sleep at…

Here’s a Look at What’s Coming Up This Week…

So this weeks’ posts are supposed to be all about creating life outside of your work and a career. I think so often we define ourselves by what we do,  be it a writer, a doctor a teacher, server, especially…

My Self-Publishing Journey: Securing an Editor is Imminent

I found editors! Somebody cue the Pointer Sisters because I’m so excited! I’ve found editors that I like, and that I would feel comfortable hiring.  I haven’t reached out to anyone – not quite there yet, but just having access…

I Finally Began Searching for an Editor

I started searching for an editor today, and I gotta tell you it was exhausting. I’m pretty anal when it comes to shit like that (no pun intended – do people even use the term anal anymore?). I’ve come to…

Getting it Write: A Book Self-Publishing Story In the Beginning

As you may or may not know, I have decided to self-publish a book. Twenty years or so ago, I wrote a short story that I tried to get published in the New Yorker, but was summarily rejected. I mean…

She Needs to Create a Routine…and a Rich Paul

And she is me.  It’s 10:18pm and here I find myself, once again, writing at the very last minute, trying to achieve my goal of posting every day for the month of October. This is unnecessary stress I’m putting myself…

I’m Cultivating Self-Discipline Because Nobody Likes a Tease…

And believe me I’m not trying to be, but here’s another day, another fired story delay.  I don’t know what to say. It’s funny, because when I had that 9-5, I was very disciplined. I kept a really good schedule….

Maybe Tomorrow

My fired story won’t be here today. I have a serious case of writer’s block. Part of it’s due to the subject matter. But I’m starting to believe that a much bigger part of it is because I don’t write…

Fired Up, but not Ready to Go

So I know I said I would have my fired story posted today, but alas, I didn’t finish it. Honestly, it has been one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to write. There are so many emotions associated with…

Editing My Short Story: I’m Back at it Again

It’s Easter! Happy Resurrection Sunday! When I was a kid, they used to play this song on the radio called “The Second Time Around” by this group called Shalamar. I have no idea what that song is about, I just…

Hello! Welcome to Shirscribe! I know my face doesn't look so welcoming in this photo, it's just that I did those braids myself and I actually like this pic. But I am really happy you're here, so come on in, have a look around, read a post or 50, comment if you'd like and come back soon!

Introducing My Writing Practice!

You know, writing rarely comes easy for me. Most of the time I mull over it forever, then edit it and edit it,  only for it to still be filled with errors, or just not be quite right.

Part of the problem is I’m reaching for that old unattainable perfection. The other part is I need to read and write more.

So this is me, writing more.

In this series, I’m giving myself two hours to write about a topic of my choice nonstop, and 30 minutes to edit it before I post it here, just as it is.  The great sentences and the incoherent ones with spelling and grammatical errors too.  I’m just going to write and see what it will be.

I’ll be posting these writing practices once a week. I’m not sure which day, and maybe no particular day, just one time a week, with no end date as of now.

I can be so insecure about my writing, so I think this will be helpful.

Here’s to writing and getting better at it!

Thanks for reading!
