I’m a Writer, Not a Reader, But I’m Tryna Be Both

I want to read more. One of my goals this year is to read at least one book a month. That book for January was supposed to be Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison. But look at January, it just…

This Post is Late ‘Cause I Was Too Tired to Write: A Fitness Post

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, writing can be exhausting, and that is because thinking can be exhausting. People tend to think ( actually I don’t know what people tend to think, but this is what I…

Where I’m been & Finishing the Year Strong

So I’m back, and if you’re wondering where I’ve been – tired. That’s where I’ve been. I’ve been tired – just not in the mood to write. Just mentally and emotionally drained by shit that goes down in life. Stress…

The Director*

He hit me with a cheesy opening line that I regret I don’t remember. Followed by several self-deprecating ones that I’m sorry he felt necessary to tell. All before, unsolicited, he revealed that he was a director, and immediately I…

How I Write: A Review of Last Week’s Post

Don’t you hate it when you have to make a decision, and either way you choose you win, but either way you choose you also lose? But anyway, that’s not what I came to talk about, just something that was…

My Rough, Rough, Rough Draft of an Upcoming Post about Networking

Okay so the above is where I want to end and right now for the next 30 minutes, I’m just going to write to get how I felt that night off of my chest. I want to congratulate myself on…

Do People Really Change? My Thoughts on the Topic via Last Night’s ‘This is Us’ Episode

So often when I tell people I’m a writer, they want to know what books I read, or recommend. That’s never an easy question for me, because I don’t really read much. I’m more of a TV watcher. About 20…

Writing in the Absence of Light

They say figure out what you love to do and find a way to get paid for it…or something like that. I think it was Kathie Lee Gifford who said her father told her that. And I guess with this…

The Beauty of Failure

This is not the post I intended it to be. I planned on this being my inaugural interview post. You know, like I promised here all the way back in October. Man, I can’t believe it was that long ago….

The Beauty of Rediscovering an Old Short Story

I wrote a short story over 20 years ago, well, I started it over twenty years ago, and finished it about a year later. It was so long ago that I don’t even remember my writing process. All I remember…

Have I told you lately that I’m a writer?  I feel like someone could put together a compilation of all the times I’ve said I’m a writer, similar to the one that was done of Meghan McCain constantly saying, “my…

A Writer’s Doubts Get a Little Miracle

I’m a writer, plain and simple. I don’t like to use “aspiring” because, well, writing’s what I do. I’ve been doing it for years – for the majority of my life as a matter of fact – and I think…

Hello! Welcome to Shirscribe! I know my face doesn't look so welcoming in this photo, it's just that I did those braids myself and I actually like this pic. But I am really happy you're here, so come on in, have a look around, read a post or 50, comment if you'd like and come back soon!

Introducing My Writing Practice!

You know, writing rarely comes easy for me. Most of the time I mull over it forever, then edit it and edit it,  only for it to still be filled with errors, or just not be quite right.

Part of the problem is I’m reaching for that old unattainable perfection. The other part is I need to read and write more.

So this is me, writing more.

In this series, I’m giving myself two hours to write about a topic of my choice nonstop, and 30 minutes to edit it before I post it here, just as it is.  The great sentences and the incoherent ones with spelling and grammatical errors too.  I’m just going to write and see what it will be.

I’ll be posting these writing practices once a week. I’m not sure which day, and maybe no particular day, just one time a week, with no end date as of now.

I can be so insecure about my writing, so I think this will be helpful.

Here’s to writing and getting better at it!

Thanks for reading!
